Four months old found me reluctantly toted off to my first kitten show. Wind and Echo didn't feel I had the
proper temperament to be a show kitten. They thought that they'd give it a try anyway because the show fees
had already been paid.
Patricia Peters was Wind's traveling companion. I remember them talking during the entire trip about my
fearful temperament and aloof manner. Wind explained how extra efforts were being made to help me
navigate my fear and regain the ability to trust.
I listened to them speak about my fearful condition and what more could be done to help me. The discussion
lasted four hours. Their voices were calming. I was beginning to realize how much they cared for me. This was
a new in-sight. All of my previous experiences had taught me not to trust. I was right to enjoy the security of
their arms.
Later we arrived at the motel. Trish, who has had surgery on her back, let us all out of our carriers. We sat
together and relaxed on the bed. Wind finished unloading the car. During this relaxing time I immediately
jumped into Trish's arms. I was feeling a special bond with her. I knew she somehow understood my pain.
When Wind entered the room, Trish asked who this cuddly little kitten was. Wind was shocked and informed
her that I was the schizoid kitten that they had been discussing the entire trip. She couldn't believe that I was
being so trusting
For the first time, since the injury, I stood up fully. Wind immediately noticed something
wrong with my hind legs. Her concern was that I had lacked critical nutritional elements
during the time of my living in the abusive situation. The discussion returned to helping me.
Despite my hind legs looking slightly off I attended my first show. I loved the attention and
didn't show any fear. I obtained finals in 7 out of 10 rings. Five other Pixie kittens were my
competition. Mommy Wind kept telling me how proud she was of me. I loved playing both at
the show and in the motel. I never realized how fun life could be.
Wind took me to the vet the day after arriving home from the show. The veterinarian
discovered, through x-rays, that my back was broken. He was amazed. How could I still walk
when I should be paralyzed? There was nothing to be done now as my back had healed. I
didn't care. I had emerged from my shell of fear and was engaging in a life of love and fun.
The story I share with you is sad and true. I am fortunate that it has a happy ending.
My life started out like most kittens in a litter that included two siblings. When I turned 5 weeks old an act of abuse broke my back close to
the hip, shattering the vertebrae in to three pieces. This event was unknown to any individual outside the house. The injury should have left
me paralyzed. I struggled to recover with out medical attention. I was on my own living in fear and hiding.
When I turned 10 weeks old Wind and Echo rescued me from my plight through legal intervention. I was soon recuited in to the Agency to
begin formal training. When they picked me up I reeked of smoke earning me the name Fire Fighter, a.k.a. Probie.
Despite great efforts to help me adjust and feel comfortable, my progress was cautious. I slithered about most times. I did seek comfort in
their laps and arms, though strangers and loud noises sent me scrambling for cover.
After that weekend, I never looked back, only forward. I no longer lived in fear. I enjoy everything. I
continued to show well as a kitten. Rarely did the judges notice my hind legs being slightly off. I attended
my first adult show when I was eight months old. I earned my Championship and missed being a one show
grand by a single final.
Each show after that I advanced one title. I earned my Quadruple Grand Championship, including all the
points I needed, in four shows. It took me another three shows to get all my points and a "Best" cat to
earn my Supreme Grand Championship. I also earned a Regional Win that year. I was in the top 10 All
Breed Cats in our region. I also finished Second Best of Breed internationally behind the great IW SGC
Expressivepixies Tim McGraw.
I am retired from showing now and live a life of ease. Sometimes I miss showing very much. I really love
the lime light. The Agency promoted me from Field and PR work to the Production Department. I'm
enjoying my new reassignment. Life is good.
Thank you for reading my story. Take care and enjoy life. I am.
Sincerely, RW SGC Special Agent Fire Fighter (a.k.a. Probie)
