I know some of you will say you have had problems when feeding raw meat. That feeding raw
means the kittens get sick or your adults get sick. Perhaps you are afraid of salmonella poisoning. I
have been feeding raw for over 4 years now and I have never had any problems. Here are some of
the things I do.

1.  Buy containers that will be strictly used for the raw meat and never anything
else.

2.  Always use the same utensils for the same containers.

3.  Never leave the meat on the counter to thaw over night. Leaving meat at room
temperature is a good way to get bacteria growing. I suggest using the microwave to
finish thawing after you have allowed it to sit in the refrigerator overnight.

4.  Never leave the meat sitting on the counter after feeding, refrigerate
immediately.

5.  If you do grind your own meat you must not let it get too thawed out before
grinding.

6.  You must wear sterile gloves when handling the meat to help prevent
contamination. Refreeze it as soon as possible aftre grinding. If you are grinding
different kinds of meat in one day be sure you clean and sterilize your grinder
between different types of meats and after your final grind.

7.  Make sure all surfaces that the meat touch are well sterilized.

I hope this helps you understand how to prepare and store your raw meat.

Another thing that I do is buy disposable plates for the kitties to eat off of. It saves a lot of time
since I do not have to be sterilizing their food dishes.

If you have any questions please feel free to email me at

Next time I would like to talk about additives to the raw meat diets, such as extra vitamins and
other things. Since I do not do this myself I would love some imput from others who do add
supplements to their raw meat.
